Ghazal 7

From the Divan of Hafez · 8 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

Come, Sufi, for the cup’s mirror is bright and clear —

come see the purity of this ruby-colored wine.

Ask the secret behind the veil from the drunken rends,

for this state is unknown to the high-stationed ascetic.

The Anqa is no one’s prey — take back your snare,

for there the wind is all that fills the net, forever.

In the feast of time, drink a cup or two and go —

do not expect, that is, an everlasting union.

O heart! Youth has passed and you gathered no rose of joy —

in old age, do not bring disgrace upon your name.

Strive for present pleasure, for when the water was cut off,

Adam lost the garden of paradise, that abode of peace.

We have earned the right of service at your threshold —

O master, look with mercy upon your servant.

Hafez is a devotee of the wine cup — O breeze, go!

And from this servant, convey devotion to the Sheikh of Jam.
