Ghazal 83

From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

If from the hand of your musky tresses a wrong was done — it is done.

If from your Hindu mole some cruelty fell on us — it is done.

If the lightning of love burned a wool-wearer’s harvest — it burned.

If the king’s oppression fell upon a beggar — it is done.

On the path, there should be no resentment — bring wine.

Whatever cloud you see, since it passed like clarity — it is done.

Love-play requires patience, O heart — stand firm.

If there was vexation, there was; if a wrong was done — it is done.

If a heart was stolen by the beloved’s glance — it was stolen.

If between soul and beloved a tale unfolded — it is done.

From tale-bearers, displeasures arose — but

if among companions something unseemly passed — it is done.

Do not fault Hafez, O preacher, for leaving the cloister —

why bind the feet of freedom? If he went somewhere — he went.
