From the Divan of Hafez · 9 couplets
...
Cupbearer, bring wine — for the month of fasting has passed.
Pour the cup — for the season of repute and name has passed.
The precious time has gone — come, let us make up
the lifetime that passed without the presence of flask and cup.
Make me so drunk that in selflessness I do not know
in the arena of imagination who came and who has passed.
In hope that a drop from your cup may reach us,
at the tavern bench each morning and evening our prayer for you has passed.
The heart that was dead received new life in the soul,
when a scent from the wine’s breeze passed through its senses.
The ascetic was proud — he did not travel the road safely.
The rend, through the way of humility, passed to the Abode of Peace.
The ready coin of my heart was spent on wine —
it was counterfeit and dark, so it passed into the forbidden.
How long can one burn like incense in the fever of repentance?
Give wine — for life has passed in pursuit of raw desires.
Do not counsel Hafez anymore — he found no road.
The lost one to whose palate pure wine has passed.
